LGBTQ

By Jonathan K. Fernand, Matthew R. Capriotti, Daniel E. Conine, and Tara A. Fahmie

In a groundbreaking moment at the 2023 annual convention for the Association for Behavior Analysis International in Denver, the LGBTQ+ Special Interest Group (SIG) was informally formed. At last year’s conference, many interested members of the LGBTQ+ community attended several conference events focused on issues related to sexual and gender minority people. These events ignited motivation for advocacy within behavior analysis, leading to the inception of the LGBTQ+ SIG. Our current mission is to: provide space to discuss, advocate, and support matters directly related to the treatment of LGBTQ+ people in behavior analysis. We currently count over 40 members among us, and we look forward to growing in the future!

Over the past year, the SIG has applied and been approved as an officially recognized SIG, created systems for SIG operations, held our first meetings, and disseminated our first scholarship awards. At the May 2024 convention, we held our first business meeting and formal social event. Our inaugural board included Matthew Capriotti (President), Jonathan Fernand (President-Elect), Daniel Conine (Treasurer), and Tara Fahmie (Secretary). The SIG’s officers have also been supported by many talented volunteer members including Zoë Akin-Amland, Victoria German, and Crystal Slanzi who have assisted with our social media accounts, dissemination efforts, and scholarship award materials.

The LGBTQ+ SIG seeks to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ topics, catalyze innovation in research and clinical practice, and provide opportunities to educate and engage in critical discussions. The SIG will foster mentorship for researchers and practitioners interested in applying behavior analysis to better the lives of LGBTQ+ people. The SIG will explore, debate, and advocate for persons at the intersection of LGBTQ+ and the practice of behavior analysis.

Individuals who are interested in joining can find us on Facebook (LGBTQ ABAI SIG) and Instagram (@lgbtqabaisig) where links to our membership application can be found; or, they can email Jonathan Fernand (jfernand@fit.edu). All interested in joining a network that strives for improving the lives of LGBTQ+ people are encouraged to join, regardless of gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation.

This year, we launched our SIG scholarship program, which aims to increase the presence of LGBTQ+ perspectives within ABAI by defraying the cost of convention attendance for students and early-career professionals. Over the next year, we will continue our efforts to grow our membership, expand our equityfocused scholarship program, and take action toward research and clinical collaborations. As we reflect on our progress over the past year, we are filled with excitement for the impact our ongoing efforts will make in the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals. We hope those who are interested will join us in creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.
