Evolutionary Sciences Special Interest Group – 2025 SIG Update

The EvoSci SIG was created in 2023 and founded in 2024 with the mission to advance and evolve the science of behavior analysis through lenses of the evolutionary sciences, behavioral selection, and relational/symbolic learning at the cultural level – from micro to macro. Our mission is to foster an analytic view of relational/symbolic learning and evolution – variation, selection, and retention – at the phylogenic, ontogenic, and cultural levels within an individual, a group, and groups and groups (from genes to humans). Our overarching objective is to expand this vision across disciplines and cultures through research, education, and practice collaborations. The EvoSci SIG will use a multilevel selection approach to analyze direct, indirect, and cultural contingencies in contexts where behavior changes within small groups can be nurtured to prevent resurgence after behavior analytic treatments. Furthermore, through such explorations, we aim to explore models and processes that address conditions resulting in harmful insensitivity to social-environmental variables. Our members and those who consume the products of our work will include experimental and applied behavior analysts, evolutionary scientists, and collaborators from related disciplines who work to improve the world with trust and psychological safety. Specifically, the organization shall:
1. Serve as a scientific and professional reference and networking group for its members.
2. Disseminate information to promote its mission to a wider audience.
3. Organize an annual meeting to provide a forum for discussion of the affairs of the SIG.
